Feedback

Hi guys:

This time I'm doing the feedback of the course.

I have one word....AWESOME!!!!

This course I think was so awesome because it let us know many things about cultural traits around the world, also the tools used for the assesment were very cool.

Doing my own blog was like the coolest thing I've ever done in a subject. Also the investigation we've done about cultural facts that may represent an opportunity for a business rocked so much.

The teacher is awesome to, very objective with her comments and very critical, I like that.

Indigenous Segregation

Hi everyone:

This night I'm gonna tell you about Indigenous segregation around the world, asnwering a question from a class.

2.Do you know of other cases of indigenous communities that have gone through the same process?

I actually know about some few indigenous peoples who have been segregated in their own nation, to name a few:

  • Navajo in North America
  • Cherokees in North America
  • Bushmen from Namibia
  • Pygmies from Africa
  • Zulu from Africa
  • Tutsi from Africa
  • Hutu from Africa
  • and many more.
The fact is that in many of the cases these people were forces out their ancestral home ino other lands by the "civilized" men.

Here's an Image of the evolution of Indiginous etnies.

And here's a MAP of the Indigenous Peoples in North America, in the year 2000.

The Bushmen in Botwswana inhabit the Kalahari Reserve. In the 1990s Diamonds were discovered there, and the Botswanian government came to the Busmen and told them the will have to leave the place in order for them to harvest Diamonds.
"In three big clearances, in 1997, 2002 and 2005, virtually all the Bushmen were forced out. Their homes were dismantled, their school and health post were closed, their water supply was destroyed and the people were threatened and trucked away.

They now live in resettlement camps outside the reserve. Rarely able to hunt, and arrested and beaten when they do, they are dependent on government handouts. They are now gripped by alcoholism, boredom, depression, and illnesses such as TB and HIV/AIDS.

Unless they can return to their ancestral lands, their unique societies and way of life will be destroyed, and many of them will die.

Although the Bushmen won the right in court to go back to their lands in 2006, the government has done everything it can to make their return impossible, including banning them from accessing a water borehole which they used before they were evicted; without it, the Bushmen struggle to find enough water to survive on their lands."

This is very BRUTAL example of segregation, but this is reality and in many countries of the world this happens every day. The greed for resources has driven mindless many people in our society.

I recommed you to see two movies. Blood Diamond and Hotel Rwanda. These movies are related with segregation in Africa.

E-Commerce in The Middle-East

Hi People!

As you know, Electronic Commerce has grown a lot in our days. There's few people who has not ordered something via internet in Amazon or eBay or sites like those in our culture.

The fact is that in our western culture business tend to be agile without to much strict law. But it doesn't mean that in all places of the world it is like that. And altough it is inevitable for a country to be touched Globalization (Unless they are like North Korea) many islamic countries have specific laws in the way the must conduct business.

Lets begin talking about e-commerce. ¿What is it? "The use of electronic transmission mediums to engage in the exchange, including buying and selling, of products and services" [Greenstein Marilyn, 2001 ]. Now let's see which benefits it gives to us:

As you can see it has a lot of benefits, but nevertheless it has also some risks:
1. Security
2. Product quality
3. Payment problem
4. Product delivery problem
5. Difficulties to locate right web site.

Islmace people "places more value on someone's word as opposed to a written agreement. A person's word is connected to their honour". So for them, having business without speaking is hard, as they are not putting their honor in risk.

According to the Qur'an, Allah has prohibited interest but accepted trade, these are the literal rules taken from Qur'an.

  • "Alla hath permitted trade and forbidden usury" (2:275)
  • "When you have finished your prayer, then disperse, seeking the grace of God in WORKD AND TRADE".(62:10)
  • "There is no harm in trading while ye are engaged in pilgrimage". (2:192)
  • "O man of faith! Do not devour the goods of another with injustice but trade based on mutual agreement and good-will is allowed". (4:29)
  • "O ye who believe fear Allah and give up what remains of your demand for usury, if you are indeed believes". (2:278)

From the above, we can see that trade can be donde only if there's no injustice or usury interest. To the islam e-commerce is a way of Bai-Salam (buying and selling in advance), and the conditions applied to Bai-Salam are:
  • Price fixed with offer and acceptance.
  • Pay in cash or goods,
  • Products have to be clearly identified.
  • Delivery date has to be fixed.
Thus we can see that no all the rules are applied in e-commerce, in some cases when you buy online the things don't come as you saw them, or the delivery date is not the one you expected. But companies doing e-commerce in Middle-East should strictly follow these rules.

In spite of having so many rules, the e-commerce has grown a lot in this region. According to "BusinessIntelligence" Middle East (www.bi-me.com) on February 7 2010, the "Growth of Middle-East e-commerce are expected to surpass 15% in 2010...(...)... The region also reported the highest internet growth rate in the period 2000-2009 at 1648.2%".

Thus, we can see that even the region has very strict business laws, people is investing there and beggining to do all type of businesses.

Trade Unions...Europe and Colombia

FHi Everyone!!!
I'm going to talk about Trade Unions in Europe, and will compare it to those in Colombia.
In 1973 the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) was establipshed promote and represent european workers rights in the "EU" institutions.
But since the creation in facto of the European Union, and the integration process concerning the Euro, the setting in which the Trade Unions operate has changed a lot. According to the ETUC "To Defend and bargain for their members effectively at national level, they must coordinate activities and policies across Europe. To influence the economy and society at large, they need to speak with a single voice and act collectively at the european level."
The European Union itself has a special information service for workers in europe called worler-participaton.eu which is a service of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) which is financially supported by the European Community.
As we can see Trade Unions have space in the European Scene. Nevertheless and according to the Federation of European Employers in only 8 out of 27 EU countries, more than a half of the employed population is part of a Trade Union.
A very important in the European Trade Unions is that they must learn how to integrate themselves all accross Europe in order to effectively be representend. Because as the EU gets more and more integrated, European Legislation gets stronger and workers start to be influenced by EU's decisions. Thus is urgent for any Trade Union to get involved in the integration process. In Colombia, as we are not integrated in such a way, we don'thave to deal with a soutamerican (in a future possibly UNASUR legislation) legislation that affects soutamerican workers. Workers in Colombia must deal with the internal issues they have.
For Colombian workers there exists the ENS (Escuela Nacional Sindical), founded in 1982 in Medellin, it strives for protection of the Colombian workers.

Colombian Sales Person

The Average Colombian Salesperson
Hi people!!!
This time I´m going to present the average of a salesperson in Colombia, according to four variables which affect the behaviors of sales forces, these variables are:
  1. Organizational Commitment
  2. Leadership Behaviors
  3. Role Stress
  4. National Culture (Hofstede's cultural dimensions: power distance and individualism)
The common salesperson in Colombia is a low income and low education level. I say this because I've worked as a salesperson in 3 stores here in Colombia, and believe me, the people usually working in these stores are people with low income families, or people who depend on this work to survive, there are also students (like me) who work in these stores on vacations or weekends in order to gain some extra money.
Lets start with organizational Commitment; as I've gone through it I can say the average sales person in Colombia does not have a lot of loyalty to its company, they generally just do it because they really are obliged to work for the money and in many cases they will quit if other company offers a higher salary. I can tell you, the rotation of personel, also known as turnover is VERY high in the salesforce of Colombia. I worked in december 2008 in a store called Active/Shop, which is cool and sells nice shoes, in December I worked with some girls and guys who were very nice, but when I came back in May they were all gone! They all had other jobs in other stores or have finished technical studies. This means that the Commitment to the Organizations is low. Nevertheless there are other companies that put a lot of effort to keep the rotation low in order to generate loyalty to the company and thus improve the quality of service given to a customer. But for general, the Commitment is low.
The leadership behavior here in Colombia, as far as I've seen and lived it is very clear. The Managers are always giving tasks to the salesforce, telling them what to do, assigning tasks, areas of the store and many other things, generally there is an Initiation of the structure from the manager commands. People tend to depend on the managers orders in order to do something.
In Colombian shops the roles are clearly defined, people are given certain positions within the shop and they keep doing tasks given by the manager regarding their positions, but as higher the positions the more the person has to do, for example the manager must "manage" the store, has to do sales activities, and if able cashier activities, but a common seller the only task assigned is to sell and do the tasks given by the manager. Generally the positions are, Manager, Cashiers and general sales force, and in some cases Auxiliars. Due to the power distance present in Colombia, people from low rank will never challenge orders, I've been through it. Whenever a low rank person dissobeys an order the punishement is hard. Ambiguity is also present, I was a victim of it. One time I was given an order by a person with higher rank than me (she wasn't the manager) and me as a low rank person had to obbey, later the manager gave me an order which was in conflict with the other order and I wen't very confused, I talked to the manager and we came to an Arrangement. Altough it is no the general case, it is an example brough to life, points out that ambiguity is present here in Colombia. People always like to use power, even if they have few of it.
National Culture also plays a key role in this case, Colombia is a High Power Distance/Low Individualistic country, which means that Colombians have high respect (or fear) for the authority or may be see from far away as a thing which can be reached. Low individualistic means that people tend to develop tight relationships. In the case of a salesperson the High Power Distance is always present, and altough a salesperson is always relation to their boss, they always acknowledge the orders given by them. The Collectivism (low individualism) is always present, persons tend to develop long termn oriented relationships in many cases and are very loyal to the companions, always looking for good relationships and wellbeing for everyone. In my case I still talk to some of the people I've worked with. Altough conflicts are present when comission is given to each of the workers according to their sales, there the individuallistic side of our country emerges.

The Alligator River Story....The Story

This is the story about the last entry.

The Alligator River Story

"There lived a woman named Abigail who was in love with a man named Gregory. Gregory lived on the shore of a river. Abigail lived on the opposite shore of the same river. The river that separated the two lovers was teeming with dangerous alligators. Abigail wanted to cross the river to be with Gregory. Unfortunately, the bridge had been washed out by a heavy flood the previous week. So she went to ask Sinbad, a riverboat captain, to take her across. He said he would be glad to if she would consent to go to bed with him prior to the voyage. She promptly refused and went to a friend named Ivan to explain her plight. Ivan did not want to get involved at all in the situation. Abigail felt her only alternative was to accept Sinbad’s terms. Sinbad fulfilled his promise to Abigail and delivered her into the arms of Gregory.

When Abigail told Gregory about her amorous escapade in order to cross the river, Gregory cast her aside with disdain. Heartsick and rejected, Abigail turned to Slug with her tale of woe. Slug, feeling compassion for Abigail, sought out Gregory and beat him brutally. Abigail was overjoyed at the sight of Gregory getting his due. As the sun set on the horizon, people heard Abigail laughing at Gregory. "

The Alligator River Story

Hi globalfolks!

I recently read and excercise used to identify how people, according to their values, identify the behaviors of people, the excercise is called "The Alligator River Story", and is made up of five characters.

I'm now going to arrange them according to their offensiveness, it goes like this:

  1. Sinbad: He's the most ofensive, because he could have helped Abigail without asking her to sleep with him.
  2. Abigail: Because she decided to do anything, to reach to her "love", even sleeping with the sailor Sinbad.
  3. Slug: Because he punched Gregory, with no real reason, the fact of having compasion to someone does not justify the useof violence to settle a dispute.
  4. Gregory: Hey could have said no, without the need of being humillating with Abigail.
  5. Ivan: Well, he was not willing to pay attention to Abigail's problem, if he had no friendship or relationship with her, that's ok.
Tell me our opinions!!!
Thanks!

CORPORATIONS

Hi Everyone:

This week I'm going to talk about Corporations, the omnipresent institutions of our time. I'm going to answer a question that involves the responsibility of each member of a corporation.

¿Should Individuals (directors, employees, sharholders) bear any responsibility for the actions of a corporation? If so to what Deegree?

Before answering this question, I want to let you know, that I fully watched this magnificent documentary called "The Corporation", which you can find here www.thecorporation.com. Most of the Information in this entry is based on "The Corporation", if not I'll let you know.

After watching a lot of stuff and seeing all the cases of social irresponsibilty that corporations around the world commit, I can certainly say that individuals MUST bear responsibilities for a Corporation's actions, for instance, MONSTANTO's formerly* owned rBGH is a Hormone that makes the COWS produce more MILK, but at the expense of the Cow's Health and also at expense of the humans drinking the MILK of the farmers who use the rBGH to make their cows "profitable".
Then I ask, ¿Aren't the people working in MONSANTO responsible for producing and commercializing such a harmful prodcut, knowing their consequences, but purposely hiding them in order to sell their product and generate more profit? HELL they are responsible, if not, who's the one making decissions in those companies, maybe the shareholders or the table of directors are forcing the CEO to sell that garbage, but finally they are PEOPLE, HUMAN people who makes conscious decisions, but sadly with no moral integrity, they don't care about doing harm to others, if they are making profit.

I think that's a crime and people should get punished for their irresponsible actions, there's always people behind the corporations. People could say that a Corporation is a Legal Person, but at the end a Corporation is no more than a group of people working for their interests, and in many cases doning so no matter the consequences to others or the planet.

As Noam Chomsky says "Corporations are special persons desigend by law to be concerned for their stockholders and not for the community or laboral force" and that's exactly what MONSANTO did when they began to sold their rBGH to farmers accross America; they did it only looking for profit, they didn't care about the cows nor the people who were drinking the milk and would probably get a cancer*.

Take an example of yours, just think of a person you know who runs a company, ¿Isn't him responsible for what the company does? Obviously they do, If a friend of mine has a company and he decides to sell a genetically modified products that can 'cause cancer, and he knows that, then he's responsible for selling harmful products, and the fact is that in many cases, and almost all the cases people don't know that the sausage, or the tuna, or the milk, they are eating or drinking will probably 'cause them a disease; when this happens individuals are bearing the actions of their corporations.

I think making money is very important, but the how is even more important, and the moral side is also more important, if want to make money do it honestly, under the law, and most important taking into account the welfare of our environment and the people.

*Mosanto sold rBGH to a giant Pharmaceutical called Lily. Found at http://www.monsanto.com/monsanto_today/for_the_record/rbst_milk_labeling.asp3.
*There are investigations which assure that milk with POSILAC (rBGH) could generate cancer in human beings. Found at http://www.ethicalinvesting.com/monsanto/bgh.shtml

Wandering in the internet I found a few definitions of Corporate Culture and Natitonal Identity, I looked for them because I want to settle the relation between both. First I come with the definitions of Corporate Culture:

"Organizational culture is an idea in the field of Organizational studies and management which describes the psychology, attitudes, experiences ...
  • en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_Culture
  • is the set of values, beliefs, and relationships between individuals and functions that guide the decisions of the company in order to achieve its objectives. It results in behaviour that has been learned within a group or transferred between individuals over time. ...

  • The values, processes and encouraged behaviours in an organisation. "The way things are done around here".

  • The values, beliefs, assumptions and symbols that define the way in which the organisation conducts its business.

  • In February the 7th 2010 at 8:00 P.M.

I've also found another definition for Corporate Culture:
"What is corporate culture? It is something that managers have to establish and run all the way through a business, with clear values and beliefs, successful business principles and operations, and a suitable emphasis on human resources and customer satisfaction.

To a large extent, those at the very top, with their example, words and actions, determine the goals, philosophy and principles of the organization."

This information was found at http://www.thinkingmanagers.com/business-management/corporate-culture.php in February the 7th 2010 at 8:02 P.M.

Reading a document I found another definition of Corporate Culture, here it is:

" Corporate culture describes the whole collection of assumptions, practices and norms that people in an organization adopt over time."

Citation:GREGORY J. MILLMAN. Corporate Culture: Morte myth than reality?Electronic Paper.

Now we'll see the definitions of National Identity:

"A sense of, and pride in, the character of one’s nation.

"The term used to describe the attachment people feel to their nation. In Britain one may speak of separate national identities for the Scots, the Welsh, the English and the Irish, but also of an overarching identity with the UK. A national identity is supposed to include a common history, a set of shared values and state institutions as well as a common culture."

This information was found at http://www.hf.ntnu.no/engelsk/courses/egw/114/british/bt.htm In February 7th 2010 at 8:10 P.M.

    RELATION:

I can see they have many relations. At least I can see that the belonging to a Nation, in some cases, is similar to belonging to a Company, for example a worker of Google should be pride of working in such an enterprise, full of succes and with a joyful working environment, he could say "I WORK IN GOOGLE and I'M PRIDE OF DOING SO", as also he can say "I'M A COLOMBIAN, and I'M PRIDE OF BEING SO", the feeling of beloonging to something you love is one of the relations I can find.

I've also found that in many cases, the culture where the company is from has a big impact on its processes and projects, for example punctuality, order, quality, intracorporate relations. You can say company from Japan tends to be more ordered, centered on honor in their relationships with other cultures and companies, looking always the best in quality and human service, or a company from Germany would be centered on hard work, quality, advanced technology (like a Japanese Co.) and other characteristics of German Culture. BUT as the time goes by and Globalization gets stronger and stronger some companies tend to be multicultural and are beggining to take everything that's good from each culture, or, it can also happen that in some cases a Foreign company coming to a country, lets say Colombia, gets here by franchising, when this happens although there are some standards of quality from the mother company, the people of the country where the franchise was bought are going to work according to their Corporate culture, and in MANY cases won't be influenced by the culture of the mother company.

    The Beginning

    HI!
Well, the journey begins looking for the definition of Culture in Google, as I look the web I think that definition is rarely the same....but generally includes food, arts, music, religions.....

At least, this what I could find in google:

"Definiciones de culture en la web en inglés:
    • a particular society at a particular time and place; "early Mayan civilization"
    • the tastes in art and manners that are favored by a social group
    • acculturation: all the knowledge and values shared by a society
    • (biology) the growing of microorganisms in a nutrient medium (such as gelatin or agar); "the culture of cells in a Petri dish"
    • polish: a highly developed state of perfection; having a flawless or impeccable quality; "they performed with great polish"; "I admired the exquisite refinement of his prose"; "almost an inspiration which gives to all work that finish which is almost art"--Joseph Conrad
    • the attitudes and behavior that are characteristic of a particular social group or organization; "the developing drug culture"; "the reason that the agency is doomed to inaction has something to do with the FBI culture"
    • grow in a special preparation; "the biologist grows microorganisms"
    • the raising of plants or animals; "the culture of oysters"

    • Culture was Culture's first release. It featured Richard Thurston on vocals and guitar and was released as a 7" EP on Shadow Records.

    • Culture is a Canadian hip hop rapper and reggae artist. His biggest chart success has been Africa with Karl Wolf. The song was recorded for Karl Wolf's third studio album Bite The Bullet. This version is based on the original 1982 Africa song by Toto.

    • A microbiological culture, or microbial culture, is a method of multiplying microbial organisms by letting them reproduce in predetermined culture media under controlled laboratory conditions. ...

    • Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate") is a term that has different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. ...

    • Culture was a Florida-based vegan/straight edge hardcore band. They formed in 1992, and lasted until 1998, when Damien Moyal merged the remaining ...

    • The Culture is a fictional anarchist, socialistic, and utopian society created by the Scottish writer Iain M. ...

    • Culture is the second episode of the second series of British TV sitcom Bottom. It was first broadcast on the 8th October, 1992. It is the second episode to feature only the two main characters.

    This Information is available at
and was accesed in February the 2th 2010 at 9:31 P.M.
As you can look for a definition, you can also look for an Image....so I decided to search Culture as Images, you can see them in the left side of the post.

    These Images are available at
And were accesed in February the 2th 2010 at 9:22 P.M.

The thing is that culture has as many definitions as human beings the earth has....So tell me, ¿what is culture for you?
For me CULTURE is the essence that keeps united, or at least identified, a group of people around something, wether it be music, arts, costumes, religions, politics, and a lot of stuff I can't get to my mind right now.
